We close our 2022 season with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s unforgettable 1959 musical setting of the heartwarming story of the world-renowned Trapp Family Singers. Inspired by the 1956 German film Die Trapp-Familie, which was itself inspired by The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir, The Sound of Music has touched the hearts of audiences around the world.
Set in Austria on the eve of the 1938 union of Austria and Germany just before the outbreak of World War II, the story unfolds as Maria, a feisty novice who is not quite fitting into life as a nun, is dispatched by her mother superior to serve as governess for the seven unruly children of a stern, widowed naval captain, Baron Georg von Trapp. It’s only a matter of time before her warmth and generosity of spirit captivate the children and melt Captain von Trapp’s crusty exterior. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis and he and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children.
The show's beautiful score, which includes “Edelweiss”, “Climb Every Mountain”, “My Favorite Things”, "The Lonely Goatherd", “Do-Re-Me”, “Sixteen Going On Seventeen” and “The Sound of Music”, has made the final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein one of the world’s most beloved musicals.
