In the early years of the 1930s, as the Great Depression deepened and the nascent sound film industry matured rapidly, the creators of the live, stage-based music and theatre scene of New York made their way to Los Angeles, the vaudeville circuit houses across the country were bought up and converted to movie theatres, and the center American popular culture shifted markedly from stage to screen.
Pick Yourself Up is one of 6 OFAM 2022 concerts presented twice:
Evening: Sat, July 30, 7:30 pm
Matinee: Thu, Aug 4, 1:30 pm
This was, in many ways a blessing, as it meant a significant portion of the best work of the greatest musicians, composers, lyricists and entertainers have been preserved for posterity. Lynnea Barry welcomes another fine ensemble as she continues her survey of the best of the Songbook (which she began at Winter OFAM 2022 with a celebration of the 1920s) into the 1930s, following the likes of Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and all their associates from Broadway to Hollywood.
